So in this post I thought I would share the top 10 questions I get asked about this fun and addictive piece of software so you can decide whether the program might be a good fit for your needs. Yes, Sketchup is compatible with various other software, allowing designers to integrate different tools for a comprehensive design experience. In the fast-paced world of design, staying stagnant is a no-no. Furthermore, the same applies to how to use SketchUp for interior design. She’s also worked with carpenters and cabinet makers on designs that require custom-built features.

The final part of the initial design process on a project is to put together the detailed documentation drawings. This is by far the most time consuming part of the design process for me as a lot of work goes in to these drawings. Space planning is the first part of most of my design projects with clients. SketchUp, in its essence, is a powerful tool that brings your interior design visions to life. Gone are the days of 2D sketches that leave too much to the imagination.

This course is very short and full of actionable advice, tips and systems that you can start using today to find more time in your days. The first bonus for all students in my beginners course is a huge discount off our intermediate course – SketchUp to Layout. You will get $100 off this course, which is a massive savings on the course price. Overall most of my students start on the 30 day free trial of SketchUp Pro and that’s definitely what I would recommend as a starting point. But lots of people ask me whether they can learn how to use SketchUp on the iPad itself, rather than have a laptop or desktop computer to learn on.

Isolina can pull up models from client projects that are years old and instantly jump into the new idea the client has in mind because she’s already built an accurate working foundation. When Isolina began her interior design business in San Francisco, she found a new community of design-build professionals to collaborate with. Working with new people and different design sensibilities was exciting but also challenging when they didn’t share the same educational and cultural background. SketchUp made it easy for her to speak to her collaborators in the universal language of 3D. The course videos and activities should take you around 2-3 hours to complete for each module. But if you want to start to improve your SketchUp skills I suggest you allocated a few more hours to just play around and practice in SketchUp.

Once my ideas are created in SketchUp I then bring these in to Layout and create a professional concept to present to the client alongside samples and materials I may have collected from suppliers for discussion. You can see an example of this sort of concept document in the right hand image below. Well, not sneaky-sneaky, but let’s uncover some SketchUp secrets that can make your design process smoother than a fresh jar of Skippy.

If you’re a beginner in Sketchup or want to take your skills to the next level, check out our courses & more by clicking here. Each chapter is packed with screenshots, making the instructions easy to follow. Files on a companion site let readers play along with the book’s examples.
If you are ready to jump in to the course then follow the button below to learn more about what’s included and how it all works. On this page you will also find answers to even more questions I get about SketchUp and you can join the course on that page as well. Instead I suggest you learn how to use SketchUp on a desktop or laptop computer and use this for your main modelling work and then use the iPad app to compliment the work you do in SketchUp. SketchUp have an app for iPad, that was released officially in 2022 and it’s got some great features.

Yes, you are now ready to actually create a kitchen from scratch. We don't use drop in cabinets - it's all completely custom. You will learn to model a kitchen design from one of my own design projects (see image above) and you can then use what you learn to design a kitchen for your own home or for client projects. In my online beginners course, SketchUp for Interior Design, I teach how to use SketchUp in an interior design environment.
Once the concept has been signed off it is time to start designing everything in more detail. So this is where I will draw the cabinetry up and show all the intricate design details. Most people don’t realise what is possible with SketchUp and how much you can achieve with just one piece of design software. With each update, new features are added; existing ones are improved, and some become obsolete. Consequently, being on top of these changes ensures you’re always ahead of the curve. Consequently, these are the magic spells of the SketchUp world.
When it comes to designing your home’s interior, creating a cohesive and beautiful space can seem like a daunting task. However, with the right tools and guidance, anyone can bring their design ideas to life. In this SketchUp tutorial, we will provide a beginner’s guide to interior design, helping you use SketchUp to transform your visions into stunning reality.
But this isn't a boring online course - we have lots of fun along the way via surprise bonuses and content and within our private FB group. I am an Approved Training Partner for SketchUp Australia. They have vetted the course and I am listed on their website as an approved training provider. At the completion of the course all students will receive a certificate. I would create these plans inside Layout and we learn how to do this in my Intermediate SketchUp course (where I have free templates that you can use for this purpose as well).
These templates are included as part of my intermediate SketchUp course. I have personally only ever used SketchUp in my own interior design workflow with clients and people often ask me why I chose SketchUp over other software options on the market. SketchUp makes it easy for Isolina to change pieces based on client feedback — before the furniture is purchased or any major changes are made.
And in design, shadows can be both your best friend and your worst enemy. Optimizing shadows in SketchUp ensures that your designs look as realistic as possible. After all, you wouldn’t want your client’s dreamy sunlit room to look like it’s under a perpetual eclipse. Creating detailed room layouts is like sketching the skeleton of your design. Remember, a few inches off in SketchUp could mean a sofa that doesn’t fit in real life. And trust me, no one wants to be the designer who has to explain that hiccup.
You can read more about how I use SketchUp and Layout in my interior design workflow with clients in this blog post. We have all sorts of students in the course including designers and architects, cabinet makers, home renovators/remodelers, kitchen and bathroom designers, event planners, landscape designers and design enthusiasts. Harnessing the power of digital tools is the way forward in the ever-evolving world of interior design. Understanding how to use Sketchup for interior design not only equips you with a competitive edge but also opens doors to limitless creativity.
It’s ideal to keep your SketchUp software up to date as you will benefit from the improvements that SketchUp makes over time (some of which really speed up your workflow). However, we do support students who are learning the course using older versions of SketchUp from 2015 onwards. You can then use Layout to present your ideas and the products you’ve selected so it makes it easy for your clients to visualise the spaces. This creates faster buy-in with your clients as they can really visualise what you are proposing. In some projects I would also put together lighting and electrical plans for clients that they could use with their electrician for the installation of lights and electrical work.
